Student VISA

Visa is an official document stamped on the passport of an applicant who wishes to travel to an international destination. The visa permits the legal entry of the applicant to the foreign country he/she wishes to travel. A valid visa will have details about the purpose of the visit, for example, travel (tourism), transit visa (transiting through the country to another country), business visa (for business purpose), student visa (for the purpose of studying) and so on.

A valid visa will also have a specific entry and exit date, the visa holder is expected to enter and exit the country within the specified date given in the visa. If the visa holder stays in a country beyond the valid exit day it is a crime. The overstayed visa holder will be deported from the country and in some cases barred from re-entering a country for a specific period of time.

A student visa is a mandatory requirement that international students should have to travel abroad for educational purposes. Statement of Purpose (SOP)

Statement of Purpose is a letter written to the visa officer in about 1000 words that usually contains personal, academic, and professional details of the applicant. Statement of Purpose will state the reason to choose the specific course and the university. The detailed explanation should be convincing to the embassy officials, soap operas usually do not work. Letter of Acceptance

Letter of acceptance is a document that is issued by the university in concern stating that the candidate has been accepted into the program. The letter of acceptance will also have information with regards to the academic year in which he/she is accepted into. Tuition Fee Receipt

Tuition fees receipt is the receipt of acknowledgement of payment that the student receives once the payment has reached the university bank account. Tuition fees receipt usually arrive in the correspondence mail id within two to three days of the fund leaving the students’ loan account. Tuition fee receipts is an important document that helps the embassy take a positive decision on the application. Tuition fees prove the genuineness of the application.

Passport

Passport is one of the most important components of a visa application. A valid passport is a must for visa processing. The passport submitted by the student strictly must adhere to the minimum limit set by the embassy. Non-compliance of the same will lead to rejection of the student visa application for sure.

If the student does not have a passport at the moment he/she can apply for the same using the tatkal provision offered by the Passport Seva Kendra. The issue of passports in such cases usually happens within a week. Having a passport that adheres to strict conditions of the embassy is the responsibility of the student.

IELTS/PTE/TOEFL Score Card

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is naturally the most well-known English language test available at the moment. IELTS scores help western universities understand the English comprehensiveness of the candidate. Higher the IELTS score the better for the candidate. Each country and university have its unique score requirements and the embassy will certainly cross-check the same to ensure compliance.

IELTS is not the only English language test accepted by the universities, PTE and TOEFL are also used as a criterion to understand English competencies. It is the duty of the student to secure the exact score required as part of the education process.

Academic Documents and Work Experience Proof

The academic documents required to be furnished along with the student visa application includes the following.

  • SSLC/10th and 12th/Higher Secondary
  • Bachelor’s Degree Certificate and Postgraduate Degree (if any)
  • Work Experience Proof (if you have any)
SSLC/10th and12th/Higher Secondary

The candidate has to furnish a notarized SSLC and 12th/higher secondary certificate copy along with the application to the embassy. On certain rare occasions, the original certificates might be required to be furnished during a personal interview at the embassy.

Bachelor’s Degree Certificate/Post-Graduate Degree (if any)

The student needs to provide a notarized degree certificate copy along with semester wise certificates and a consolidated mark list of both bachelor’s degree and postgraduate degree as part of the application. If the student does have a consolidated mark list available with him, it is required that he/she launch an application for the same with the concerned university.

Work Experience Proof (if you have any)

If the students have work experience proof, naturally he/she should furnish the experience letter for the same. The experience letter will have details of the tenure of his/her stay in the office along with the activities he/she performed as part of the work. This information usually offers an add-on advantage to tilt the decision in the candidate’s favor. A work experience letter is particularly helpful in the case of master’s degree programs. Medical Certificate

A medical certificate is another mandatory document required as part of the visa application process. Usually, the embassies of the countries that accept international students will have extensive tie-ups with super-specialty hospitals (called the panel hospitals). In India, students will have to undergo medical check-ups in the same. It is called a full body checkup and the result of the same will be directly sent by the respective hospitals to the embassy concerned in a sealed cover. Documents required to be furnished at the test:

  • Passport (Original and copy)
  • Copy of the offer letter
  • Passport size photos (2 copies)
  • Earlier medical summary (if any)

Over the past few years, there has been a steady increase in the medical criteria requirements for both student visa and work visa applicants. The recent pandemic (COVID-19) has not helped either!. Precautionary tests for communicable and non-communicable diseases are becoming part of the visa process. The objective is to identify the infected applicants before they reach the port of entry.

Medical test criteria vary from country to country. In general, the medical test comprises the following components – medical history review, physical examination, chest X-ray, blood tests for infectious diseases, tests for communicable diseases such as tuberculosis, gonorrhea, Hansen’s disease (Leprosy), and so on.

With the current scenario, the scope of medical tests has expanded into including two more categories into the testing process.

  • Quarantinable Diseases Designated by any Presidential Executive Order
  • Public Health Emergency of International Concern

Under quarantinable diseases designated by any presidential executive order currently includes the following diseases – cholera, diphtheria, infectious tuberculosis, plague, smallpox, yellow fever, viral hemorrhagic fevers, severe acute respiratory syndromes, and influenza caused by novel or re-emergent influenza (pandemic flu).

In case of public health emergencies of international concern (PHEIC) category (under the International Health Regulations (IHR) of 2005) includes the following diseases – polio, smallpox, SARS, influenza, and other public health emergencies of international concern (like COVID-19).

Police Clearance Certificate/Police Certificate/Penal Certificate (PPC)

A police certificate is a statement that provides information regarding the criminal record of the passport holder. In case a person has a criminal record the copy of the same needs to be furnished. The police clearance certificate will be a determining factor to decide the eligibility of a person to study in his/her preferred destination.

The candidate can obtain the police clearance certificate by submitting an application at the Passport Seva Kendra. The documents required for getting a Police Clearance Certificate are the following.

  • Passport
  • Application Receipt (online application receipt or even SMS received from Passport Office)
  • Address proof (current address)
Financial Documents

Finally, the student as part of his/her visa processing application needs to submit financial documents prepared by a chartered accountant indicating the financial soundness of the applicant and his/her parents. A six months bank account statement attested by the concerned bank manager needs to be submitted along with the application as well. It is also considered a valid proof of funds. Fixed deposit receipts are good tools for demonstrating the financial soundness of the candidate. An affidavit (by an advocate) describing the financial soundness of the student and/or her parents or spouse needs to be prepared and filed along with the application.
